why not websphere?
Over the last handful of years IBM has gone to great lengths to ensure iSeries programmers are equipped with the tools and products necessary to take them into the next generation of building applications. IBM centered a lot of this innovation around the Java language and while much of the generated Java code can be hidden from an RPG programmers view, it is inevitable that the Java code will need to be maintained and dug into.
Introducing Java and associated Websphere products into an RPG shop can be an expensive venture. Retraining existing programmers is only the beginning of change. Everything from Quality Assurance practices to Websphere Application Server administration knowledge, to hardware upgrades need to be considered when moving to a new environment and language. These knowledge sets take years to develop.
One of the core reasons Krengel Technology Inc developed RPG-XML Suite is because we saw the need for 100% RPG based solutions that had zero dependencies on Java and/or Websphere. We "walked the line" that IBM recommended with Java and still actively maintain many Java applications today. But during that process we realized that EVERYTHING Java was doing in the Websphere environment can also be done in the RPG environment. As Krengel Technology Inc continually dwells in the Web Services world we are able to gain perspective of the different technologies involved and morph them into easy to use implementations using the RPG language. The RPG language has second to none data base access, and we aim to make RPG-XML Suite second to none for doing Web Services.
Stick with what you know and retain the large and wise investment in the iSeries - the most secure and reliable system in current existence.
